About Alex Bulloch MBE

Alex Bulloch M.B.E. formed the original Birmingham War Research Society in 1972 along with other friends from the then City of Birmingham Police Force. Alex was interested originally in the First World War as a child when learning of stories and songs from his Mother and hearing of the exploits of his Uncle who served in the army during WW1. A former soldier and merchant seaman, Alex has seen much of the World and upon leaving the service joined the police in 1958.

Alex's passion for travel took him to France with his family more than 40 years ago where he visited some Commonwealth War Cemeteries and looked at the battlefields. His interest and knowledge thus gained caused him to form the Society in order to arrange visits for friends and relatives of the fallen. The Society prospered and upon retirement from the Police Force 20 years ago, Alex took on battlefield tours as a full time, voluntary job and established the Society as a charitable supporting hobby for like minded individuals.

Since then he has taken thousands of people from all over the World to the Battlefields and Cemeteries of Northern Europe in luxury coaches on escorted trips. He has encouraged other people to become involved and utilizes the services of voluntary and knowledgeable guides to enhance the commentary and provide enjoyment for customers.

Despite fierce competition, the original War Research Society run by Alex continues to thrive and despite his advancing years he still runs six trips per year to Normandy, Somme & Ypres, Dambusters/Colditz/Berlin/Hannover & Arnhem.

For his services to the War Research Society and to charity, Alex was awarded the M.B.E. in the 2008 New Years's Honours List.

The Society is not connected in any way with others of a similar name and Alex Bulloch still operates the original War Research Society as a charitable supporting and voluntary organisation; it is not a company.
